A demonstration in Toronto to support the heirs of the Wet’suwet’en

TORONTO – About 100 people gathered on Toronto’s railroads on Sunday to support the heirs of Wet’suwet’en, who are fighting the construction of a pipeline in their area after several arrests in northern BC.

The demonstration began on Bartlett Avenue, near Dupont and Dufferin streets, at about 11 a.m.

“Today’s goal is to support Wet’s Suwet defenders who were forced out of their territory with a gun,” Toronto’s Wet’s Suwinger Eve Saint told CP24 on Sunday morning. “Up to 50-100 RCMPs went there, guns fully loaded, TAC teams – that’s wrong.”

On Friday, the RCMP arrested 15 people – including two journalists – as a result of protests blocking access to a road used by Coastal GasLink pipeline workers.

On Sunday, a large crowd gathered near the Canadian Pacific railroads, holding signs saying “no pipeline,” “Stop the RCMP’s attack on indigenous peoples,” and “Wet’s suwet solidarity.”

Toronto police and the Toronto Fire Department were present at the incident, but no arrests were made.

Wet'suwet'en Toronto Rally

Sunday’s gathering was one of several held in Canada this weekend to support Wet’suwet’en hereditary masters who oppose the construction of the Coastal Gaslink pipeline.

The national gas company has signed agreements with all 20 selected band councils to build the pipeline. However, the heirs of the Wet’suwet’en have long argued that joint councils have power only in the reserve country.

“We are talking about the sovereignty of indigenous peoples. We are talking about the title of indigenous peoples.

The Royal Canadian Equestrian Police (RCMP) has enforced a ban in northern BC banning protesters from blocking access routes used by plumbers.

Earlier this week, Coastal GasLink said their deliveries were in danger of running out as a result of the blockades.

In both 2019 and 2020, RCMP officials enforced court orders issued to Coastal GasLink, leading to several arrests and demonstrations nationwide.
