Arizona police have recommended that “Doomsday couple” Chad Daybell and Lori Vallow Daybell be charged with attempted murder in a 2019 shootout that authorities said was targeting a member of the Vallow Daybell family.
The couple, who are already behind bars in Idaho, where they are charged with the murder of Vally Daybell’s two children, Tylee Ryan and JJ Vallow, are now suspected of killing Brandon Boudreaux, Vallow Daybell’s ex-husband’s ex-husband. According to the Maricopa District Prosecutor’s Office, for which police recommended charges on Tuesday.
A DA office spokesman told HuffPost on Thursday that it was investigating the charges and declined to comment further.
Boudreaux divorced Vallow Daybell’s niece when police said the person driving the Jeep Wrangler shot his vehicle when he returned home in Gilbert, Arizona, on October 2, 2019. His vehicle was damaged but he was not injured. , according to a police report.
The jeep was later identified as registered to Charles Vallow, the fourth husband of Lori Vallow Daybell, who was shot dead three months earlier by his brother Alex Cox, which Cox described at the time as self-defense. After the vehicle was seized in November 2019, police found the remains of a shot.
Boudreaux had filed for divorce from his then-wife Melani Boudreaux months before the shooting. When the police investigating the shooting asked him if he could have enemies, he mentioned his divorce along with Lori Vallow Daybell, according to police body camera footage.
“Crazy things happened to her aunt who killed her husband, but I hope it has nothing to do with this,” she told police.
Authorities say they found evidence to believe Vallow Daybell planned the murder of Brandon Boudreaux with Cox and Chad Daybell a few weeks before the shooting.
The trio allegedly tinted Jeep’s windows and removed the car from the back seat, and Cox and Daybell allegedly used burners to communicate with each other in the hours before the shooting.
They planned to kill Boudreaux because he had a “dark soul,” according to a police report that referred to undefined evidence and statements.
Legal documents have previously argued that Vallow Daybell and Daybell, who was a religious “doomsday” writer before his arrest, believe that dark spirits can rule people, but they can be removed if the arrested person is killed. Vallow Daybell’s family has also described him as a religious extremist who joined the cult in the year before Charles Vallow’s death.
Boudreaux also accused his wife of belonging to a cult in a divorce file filed in February last year and said he knew the whereabouts of Vally Daybell’s then-missing children, Tyle and JJ, The Arizona Republic reports. Their bodies were later found buried in the Daybell Country Home in Rexburg, Idaho in June 2020.
Boudreaux’s ex-wife, who moved to Rexburg after remarriage, has denied involvement in the disappearance of children, Republic reports.
Charles Vallow was also divorcing his wife and had filed a protective order against him when police said Cox was shot dead in a clash with Vallow at his home in Chandler, Arizona in July 2019.
Police refused to shoot in self-defense, but in June 2021, authorities charged Lori Vallow Daybell with conspiracy to kill her then estranged husband, her brother Cox.
Cox died last December of a doctor’s finding of natural causes.
In addition to charges involving two children, Chad Daybell is also charged with the alleged murder of his previous wife, Tammy Daybell, who mysteriously died in his sleep just two weeks before he moved to Hawaii with Vallow Daybell and they married. Tammy Daybell’s body was excavated in December 2019 for further testing after the children disappeared. The results of these tests have not been published.
